My Testimony:Teddy's Story of Survival and Peace

Introduction: A Journey Through the Shadows

My name is Teddy. I am a deaf man living in Kenya, and my life has been a journey defined by both deep quiet and profound resilience. In 2014, I went through a sudden, frightening crisis that completely upended my life. What began as a terrifying medical and emotional emergency ultimately transformed into an essential milestone of my personal and spiritual journey. Navigating a world without sound already presents unique everyday hurdles, but experiencing a sudden mental and physiological crisis amplified those challenges in ways I never could have anticipated. This is the story of how I lost my way, how a community in Nairobi reached out to help, and how I ultimately found a lasting baseline of interior peace.

The Night of the Crisis

The crisis began unpredictably one evening. I was searching for my former girlfriend when, without warning, my heart began beating at an extremely rapid pace. I experienced a deep physical sensation—a powerful vibration and a sudden tremor inside my chest that felt almost like a snake twisting within me. As a deaf individual, I rely heavily on internal physical cues and visual markers to gauge my environment. When my own body began sending these chaotic, violent signals, I became entirely overwhelmed with intense fear and panic.

In that state of total psychological confusion, my survival instincts overrode my rational thoughts. I started running at an incredible speed, fleeing an invisible danger I could neither hear nor understand. I traveled a vast distance through the dark. Along the way, I encountered aggressive stray dogs, but I kept running until they eventually fell away behind me. Exhausted and completely disoriented, I lost all track of where I was. In the height of my confusion, I felt a desperate need to strip away anything constricting me; I removed my clothes and threw away my leather belt, leaving myself completely vulnerable to the elements and the environment.

Barriers to Communication and the Power of Kindness

Because I am deaf, communicating with the people around me during this ordeal was extremely difficult. In Kenya, access to immediate sign language interpretation in emergency situations remains a significant systemic barrier. When I tried to signal for assistance, some older bystanders did not understand what I was trying to communicate. Misinterpreting my frantic gestures and vulnerable state, they grew defensive and attempted to attack me.

Yet, even in the middle of that highly frightening situation, unexpected kindness appeared. A local mother and her young child stepped forward to intervene, protecting me from the crowd and helping me find a place to rest. Her compassion proved that basic human empathy transcends language barriers. Eventually, my family and relatives tracked me down. Recognizing that I was experiencing a severe medical and psychological episode, they took me directly to Mathari Hospital in Nairobi, a major psychiatric facility where I could receive structured medical care, professional evaluation, and the treatment necessary to stabilize my condition.

Reflections on Healing and Spiritual Peace

Some time after my discharge and recovery, I was reflecting on the events of 2014 when I watched a video online of Prophet T.B. Joshua ministering to a Kenyan man. In the video, the man had similarly thrown away a serpent belt during a crisis. Seeing that digital story deeply reminded me of my own physical experience and shed a symbolic light on the significance I had attached to throwing away my belt during my own panic. Around this same time, I experienced something deeply meaningful to me spiritually that brought closure to the entire ordeal.

In a vivid vision, I saw myself sitting on the ground while warm, radiant sunlight shone directly onto my face. In the vision, my mouth opened and closed as though it were automatically releasing the old, heavy pain I had carried for so long. Then, the heavy, suffocating light around me faded away. I saw Jehovah God seated on His throne surrounded by angels of light, and I watched a beautiful angel soaring high in the sky. For me, this vision represented total peace, release, and the final closing of a difficult chapter.

Understanding Health Crises and Community Support

Experiencing a sudden psychological or physiological crisis can be an incredibly isolating experience, particularly for individuals within marginalized communities. If you or someone you know is navigating a sudden mental health crisis or dealing with severe disorientation, it is vital to know that help is available.

1. Seeking Professional Medical Care

When dealing with acute panic, disorientation, or sudden physical symptoms like a racing heart, seeking care at a certified facility is a necessary first step. In Kenya, institutions like the Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital provide specialized psychiatric care, counseling, and stabilization services. Professional intervention helps ensure that individuals receive an accurate evaluation and a safe environment to recover.

2. Enhancing Deaf Accessibility in Emergencies

Teddy’s experience highlights the critical need for improved sign language resources within emergency services and healthcare centers. Organizations like the Kenyan National Association of the Deaf (KNAD) work continuously to advocate for better communication access, ensuring that deaf individuals can safely express their needs during medical emergencies without being misunderstood.

3. Building Supportive Community Networks

Recovery is rarely a solitary journey. Having informed family members, attentive neighbors, and accessible counseling networks creates a safety net that protects vulnerable individuals during moments of acute stress. Today, Teddy feels much better, looking back at 2014 as a challenging chapter that no longer defines his present. The belt is gone, the fear is behind him, and he continues to move forward in safety, recovery, and hope.
